October’s
person of the month is a local celebrity of sorts. She is a young
woman who will be representing the Fredericksburg area in Richmond in January.
She is also intent on spreading the word on how important organ donation
is.
Meet Pamela Dickerson, a
college freshman and Ms. Fredericksburg Fair 2000. She hopes to major
in pre-law with a minor in music and represent Fredericksburg as well as
her predecessors have done.
The day we sat down with
Pam she was a few days away from leaving for college and had numerous details
she still needed to take care of. Despite that she was very gracious
and attentive.
She has spent her whole life
in the Fredericksburg area as a small town girl so she was looking forward
to seeing the city with some apprehension and much excitement. She
does know as she prepares to venture off on her own she’ll be able to return
to her family and friends and a slower pace as time permits. Family
and friends are really important to her, she admits it has sometimes been
hard to accommodate everything into her schedule but family and friends
do win out. “If you don’t have family and friends to care about
(and who care about you) what do you have?” is her philosophy.
So what does a person as
busy as she is do for fun and relaxation when time permits? Well, some
of the things she enjoys are singing, running and swimming to name a few.
At the time we spoke to her
she was focusing on college and finding out what her schedule would be
as Ms. Fredericksburg Fair. She didn’t have her complete schedule
but expected to participate in the Fredericksburg Christmas Parade (December
2, 2000) and representing the area in Richmond at the competition for Ms.Fair
Association in January.
So where does organ donation
fall into all this? She is very pro organ donation. Not only
for personal reasons but because it is something she feels is very important
to give those who need it a second chance.
Her hope is that someday
soon Doctors, Lawyers and the DMV will start making available to the general
public the information necessary to make such a monumental decision.
She hopes that the more people become educated about this option that they
will make it their choice and make it well known to family and friends.
What impression did Pam leave
us with? That she is a determined young lady with old time values.
With her determination and drive she’ll probably go far in life.
See you in December!
