The Saint James house is open only for a week each in April (during Garden Week) and October.  During those 2 weeks it is open only select hours, for the convience of the woman who resides there.

Saint James House was built as a ‘gentleman’s cottage’.  It was built on a lot owned by Fielding Lewis and purchased by George Washington.  Dr. Hugh Mercer later bought this land in the 1760’s and built a home he occupied until he married, as it wasn’t proper to start a family in a gentleman’s cottage.

There have been other interesting gentleman who were notable in their own rights but it will be necessary to visit to find out just who they were.

The home and grounds themselves are also interesting to hear about as they have undergone some changes.  Some minor, some more dramatic but just the same they all have a tale to tell.
