Free Lance- Star Classic
Soap Box Derby
Every June, over 150 young
(ages 9 through 16) drivers walk up the hill on Williams Street in Fredericksburg.
At the top of the hill awaits their car, a soap box derby car that is.
Fredericksburg is home to one of the largest soap box derby events in the
nation. The winners in the superstock and stock divisions will go on to
compete at the national derby in Akron, Ohio, in late July. Fredericksburg
ran it's first soap box derby in 1951, the race ran for 21 years until
it was discontinued in 1972. The tradition was revived in 1996 and has
been going on strong ever since. The race is divided into two categories,
stock and superstock. The stock cars have more restrictions placed on them
and is for the younger children. The superstock cars are designed for the
older kids.
There are plenty of great
spots along the hill to watch the races, it is a thrill for the young and
old alike.
